Connections

  1. Use I²C: BME680 and OLED SDA to GPIO 21, SCL to GPIO 22, common ground, and 3V3-compatible power.
  2. Check that module pull-ups do not raise the ESP32 bus above 3.3 V.
  3. Mount the sensor away from direct breath, hot regulators and enclosure heat.

Build steps

  1. Install Bosch's BME680 driver and BSEC software appropriate to the board and license terms.
  2. First display temperature, humidity, pressure, and raw gas resistance; label raw resistance clearly.
  3. Enable BSEC outputs only after configuring the correct sample rate and saving/restoring required state.
  4. Collect a baseline over time and present the resulting index as an estimate with its algorithm name and limitations.

Software and firmware setup

Firmware is required, but a complete ESP32/OLED/BSEC sketch is not included yet. Begin with Bosch's driver example, then use the BSEC integration matching your board, sample rate, and current license terms. BSEC setup and state handling are required for its processed air-quality outputs; raw gas resistance is not CO2 ppm.

Test your build

Readings should stabilize gradually. A BME680 raw gas-resistance number is not a CO₂ ppm measurement; BSEC outputs are algorithmic estimates and require calibration history.

Troubleshooting

  • If the sensor is absent, check 0x76/0x77 address and breakout voltage.
  • If BSEC reports configuration errors, match the library configuration to the exact MCU/sample rate.
  • If estimates jump, allow stabilization and avoid moving the sensor between environments during baseline learning.

Safety and limitations

Do not use the device to detect toxic gas, certify indoor air, or make health/safety decisions. Avoid claiming CO₂ ppm from this sensor.
