MAX7219 LED Scoreboard
Display a changing score or countdown on an 8ร8 LED matrix module using SPI-like serial control.
Parts from the database
- MAX7219CWG+ ร 1LED matrix driver; use on an 8ร8 module
- Raspberry-Pi-Pico ร 1Microcontroller
Other supplies
- 8ร8 MAX7219 matrix module with current-setting resistor fittedCommon build supply
- two pushbuttonsCommon build supply
- Pico boardCommon build supply
- USB cableCommon build supply

Connections
- Connect module VCC to its specified 5 V supply, GND to common ground, DIN to GP19, CLK to GP18 and CS to GP17.
- Use a module with 3.3 V-compatible input thresholds or a level shifter between Pico and 5 V module.
- Buttons connect GP14/GP15 to ground and use internal pull-ups.
Build steps
- Install a MAX7219 matrix library and run its scrolling-text example.
- Check module orientation; rotate the display in software if the text is sideways.
- Add two buttons to increment/decrement a score and show a short animation on change.
- Set the module brightness low indoors and raise it only if needed.
Software and firmware setup
This is a hardware-only circuit; no firmware is required.
Test your build
A test pattern should light each row/column in order; then the score should update on button presses.
Troubleshooting
- If blank, check 5 V module power and DIN/CLK/CS order.
- If scrambled, confirm the library's matrix orientation and module count.
- If Pico logic fails to register, add a level shifter or use a module documented for 3.3 V logic.
Safety and limitations
Use a current-limited USB supply and a module with the correct segment-current resistor. Avoid staring at a bright matrix in a dark room.
